Industrial designer by trade, I was looking for i7 new computer since my Thinkpad W510 give its soul. I do basically 3D CAD work beside other graphic arts so i7 and a good graphic card was a must – the budget counted too as I am retired now but still do here and there some 3D contracts or plain personal projects.
I was always a ThinPad Man, so Lenovo was my aim. ThinkPad Yoga was the One – but just out of my budget range. Then I bumped into IdeaPad FLEX 4, 15,7" demo machine – that had everything I wanted, touch screen, 2-1, i7 and 1T hard drive. Being DEMO it came also at good price (900$ CND), so home we went together.
Installed my main programs, Office, Photoshop and Illustrator, SolidWorks 3DCAD – and fly Simulator X-PLANE 🙂 No problemo! Now into our second month, I am quite pleased with the FLEX4 machine.
Design in tradition of ThinPads: Flat black, simple, business look. Slim, great lighted keyboard…. Graphic card not best – but OK.
Against: Not so much:
Battery time- so far no better then 5hrs (it is claimed to do 8+?)..
Display rather dim, have to be always at max… Was much better on my W510.
Keyboard. I loved the ThinkPad's logical layout. Here, just plain uniformly spaced keys…The arrow keys are just lost in the bunch and one have to look to find them.
On-off swith located on the right side – Easy to hang on when you want to move the machine on the table!
Conclusion: Good overall machine that does it all and fairly well, Good compromise – if you can not get, afford, the ThinkPad YOGA.
